Job Summary:

Heavy Equipment Operator operates various equipment for civil groundwork and other construction purposes. Equipment operated includes front-end loader, excavator, road roller, backhoe, dozer, grader, forklift, skid steer, and other equipment as needed. May also operate water trucks, dump trucks, and other equipment if trained.

Qualification Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous heavy equipment operation experience or training required.
  • Basic mechanical skills preferred.
  • Must have good depth perception and coordination to operate machine controls.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. CDL is preferred, but not required. 
    • CDL is required for operating water trucks if trained and obtained.
  • Willing to travel/relocate to assigned job site location within the region.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply verbal and/or written instructions in English.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operates equipment in a safe and professional manner at various job site locations.
  • Maintains equipment in a safe and clean condition.  Performs pre- and post-trip equipment inspections.  Checks fluid levels, tires/tracks, lights, and other controls for safe operation. Fuels equipment. Greases moving parts using a hand-held grease gun.  Informs Shop/Field Technician of any maintenance or repairs needed.
  • May assist with Construction Laborer duties at various job sites as needed.  May perform physical tasks involved with civil construction.

Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • May assist Shop/Field Technician with equipment maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • May perform other duties as needed.

Physical Demand Classification:

  • Heavy Equipment Operator is a Heavy Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry. Heavy Duty involves exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds continuously to move objects.
