‘We deserve this’: Behind the build of the Sam McDonald Stadium at Daylis
The newly renovated Sam McDonald Stadium at Daylis in Billings is set to host athletes after a $15 million transformation, funded through a unique public-private partnership between Billings School District 2 and the community. The project, which combined equal contributions from private donors and taxpayer funds, included major upgrades: four locker rooms, expanded concessions, larger restrooms, and a 10-lane track built for top-tier competition. Construction demanded significant labor and commitment from crews.
The build required significant labor, with crews putting in long days throughout construction.
“Ten to 12 hours a day on average, and then our average is about 50 guys a day,” Dick Anderson Construction project manager AJ Harmon said.
Local leaders hope the stadium will attract regional sporting events, concerts, and more, making Billings a hub for athletics and community gatherings. The facility honors Sam McDonald, a philanthropist whose foundation has contributed millions to local causes. Donor opportunities, including naming rights and a donor wall, are still available. School officials view the stadium as a sign of ongoing commitment to student activities and the beginning of further district improvements. Excitement is growing ahead of the first scheduled game.
